Every Child Our Future began as a registered charity in Guernsey, working in collaboration with the States Education Department and local businesses. We developed a 3-year business plan to work in collaboration with the States Education Department in Guernsey and local businesses.
Our aims were threefold:
• To improve literacy standards for local children whereby at least 85% of children attained level 4 at key stage 2
• To improve numeracy standards for local children whereby at least 85% of children attained level 4 at key stage 2
• To actively promote a culture in which the community collectively takes responsibility for and participates in the education of its children
Every Child Our Future in Guernsey facilitated the specialised training of teachers and teaching assistants to provide additional support for those children struggling with literacy or numeracy.
The success of the initiatives were underpinned by a bank of volunteers who act as ‘mentors’ for an hour at a time. Individuals from local, often high profile, businesses who take time to spend with children in school send them an important message – You are important; you are our island’s future.
Every Child Our Future is truly grateful for all the help received from local businesses and individuals alike.
Whilst the funding of teacher lead initiatives is now fully sustainable by States Education in Guernsey, new volunteers are always welcome – the more positive mentors we can supply, the more successful any extra teaching is likely to be. We cannot have too many volunteers as every extra one spreads the workload and reinforces the important message that our children matter.
Following the successful track record in Guernsey, Every Child Our Future Jersey launched in 2016 is now up and running with corporate volunteers reading in some of the most needy schools. We have also funded specialist Reading Recovery teaching resource to support the most needy children.
